Cedar Fence

Cedar Fence

Find out the pros and cons of having cedar fencing in your yard.

Pros of Cedar Fencing

Among all wood or timber that can be used to make fences, cedar is the most preferred for a
number of reasons, with the main one being its durability. A cedar fence can last as long as three
decades with the only sign of aging being gradual fading. You need not to worry about fading
though, since you can paint your fence with any stain you want, leaving it looking ever fresh.
Another major advantage of cedar as a fencing material is that it is strong (hence its durability), and
yet soft enough to allow modification and shaping into many different designs as preferred by users.

Cons of Cedar Fencing

The only downside with using cedar for fencing is its cost. Relative to other woods, cedar is quite
expensive, and understandably so. Nothing worthwhile comes cheap. For instance, compared to
pressure treated pine, cedar fences cost up to twice as much per unit length and height. However,
you will get value for your money in the long term since maintenance costs of cedar fences are quite
low.

Popular Designs of Cedar Fences

Most wood fences consist of three main parts and so do cedar fences.
1. Vertical posts – hold the fences to the ground.
2. Horizontal rails – run horizontally from post to post and are used to provide support to the
fillers.
3. Fillers – As their name suggests, fillers complete the fence by filling in the spaces between
the rails. Depending on your preferences, fillers can completely fill the spaces so that you
cannot look through, or they can leave spaces in between.

Having stated that cedar is soft and therefore easily shaped, it is necessary to look into two of the
most popular designs that you can choose from for your cedar fence.
 Gothic board on board design – this type of cedar fence consists of vertical posts firmly
embedded in the ground and three rails running across. The filler materials are vertical
planks of wood running from the top rail to the bottom rail. Regular narrow spacing is left
between each plank. The top of each cedar plank is shaped in an inverted ‘v’ to give the
fence a Gothic design.
 Dog ear solid board -This is a lot similar in design with the Gothic board on board fence. The
only differences are that this is a solid fence hence there are no spaces between the filler
wooden planks. Also, the top of the fence is flat as opposed to the inverted ‘v’ shaping.
